Non-Surgical Breast Enhancement
Macrolane
Who can have Macrolane treatment?
Macrolane treatment is available to anyone who would like to adjust the shape of their body in a non-permanent way without undergoing a major surgical procedure.
Macrolane is suitable for people (both male and female) who are reluctant to undergo general anaesthesia or be left with more visible scarring as a result of invasive surgery. Macrolane makes this possible in a well-tolerated, easy and natural way. A Macrolane treatment is an outpatient procedure that normally requires a local anaesthetic. This results in minimal disturbance to daily activities or time away from work.
Just a few of the areas where Macrolane can help you look your best:
Breast Enhancement - without the need for permanent implants
Chest - without the need for permanent implants
Buttocks – augmentation and shaping without permanent implants
Calves - shaping without permanent implants
Post liposuction concavities / concave deformities

Benefits with Macrolane body enhancement
The pure, non-animal based gel is a non-invasive injectable treatment, injected into the desired area to restore volume, giving a look that is natural and unique for you. The benefits of treatment are immediate and long lasting without being permanent. A single treatment with Macrolane can last up to 12 months. Your body slowly metabolises the biocompatible Macrolane gel. If you desire longer lasting results, you have the choice of re-treatments to maintain the aesthetic results.
Macrolane is based on hyaluronic acid of non-animal origin and produced with Q-Med’s patented NASHA technology. Hyaluronic acid is one of nature’s most versatile and fascinating substances. It is found throughout the body as well as in most other living organisms. The material has many functions, from giving the skin elasticity to lubricating joints. Hyaluronic acid can bind large amounts of water and this important property underlies the unique characteristics of NASHA products.
Consultation regarding body enhancement
Come to your consultation prepared with some questions about your treatment expectations. You will learn how Macrolane can be safely used to meet your treatment needs, and you will be asked about your medical history. When you leave your consultation, you should feel well informed about Macrolane, know how it works and you what results to expect.
Macrolane Treatment
The body enhancement treatment is normally performed using a local anaesthetic. A Macrolane procedure typically takes 30–90 minutes. Macrolane is injected into the area you wish to have treated and the results can be seen instantly. Macrolane performed by our consultant plastic surgeon.
Post-treatment
After treatment you will receive post-treatment guidelines. It is normal to notice some swelling, redness, tenderness, pain, bruising or itching, at the injection site, during the first few days after Macrolane treatment. Regular non-prescription painkillers are usually enough to treat this discomfort.
Although most people quickly return to normal daily activities, it is recommended to take it easy immediately after treatment. Avoid strenuous exercise or massaging the treated area for 2–3 weeks. After a breast treatment, wear a supporting bra for 2–3 weeks and do not sleep on the stomach. |

Your Next Macrolane Treatment
As Macrolane is naturally biodegraded, you will eventually need to repeat the treatment to maintain the result. Return visits are typically made after 9–12 months and involve injecting a smaller volume of Macrolane.

What is the difference between Macrolane treatment and a permanent breast implant?
There are several differences between Macrolane breast treatment and permanent breast implants. While Macrolane is based on hyaluronic acid, a natural substance produced by the body; permanent implants usually consist of material such as silicone that is foreign to the body. Furthermore, Macrolane is biodegradable and is intended for breast shaping and enhancement of around one cup size.
Macrolane treatment is less invasive than permanent implant surgery. Macrolane treatment is performed using local anaesthesia, unlike placement of permanent breast implants that typically requires general anaesthesia. The downtime after Macrolane treatment is usually much shorter than after permanent implant surgery, although patients are advised to avoid excessive physical activity for a few weeks following treatment. |

Can you breast feed with Macrolane enhanced breasts?
As with any implant it cannot be excluded that it might affect breast feeding. However the injection technique to place the Macrolane gel below the mammary gland makes it unlikely that breast feeding will be affected. Macrolane degrades with time – it is anticipated that Macrolane is progressively less likely to affect breast feeding 9–12 months after treatment.
Is Macrolane safe?
Yes, Macrolane is based on the same stabilised hyaluronic acid that has been used in more than 10 million treatments for facial aesthetics with no life threatening related events reported. The safety of Macrolane has been thoroughly evaluated according to relevant standards for medical devices. The safety of Macrolane breast enhancement has been shown in prospective clinical studies as well as post-market follow-up.
Are there any side effects after a Macrolane treatment?
The most common side effect is a slight soreness or swelling at the injection site. The gel can also irritate by pressure on the tissue and cause a slight inflammation. These reactions are a normal response to any injection. The treated area can feel sore and sensitive for a few days, non-prescription anti-inflammatory pills is usually enough to relieve the discomfort.
Capsules, felt as firmness in the area treated with Macrolane have been reported occasionally in breasts. If this is perceived as a problem it can usually be corrected with an easy procedure by your surgeon.
Can Macrolane cause cancer?
Pre-clinical data support that Macrolane will not cause or induce cancer. No cases of cancer related to Macrolane have been reported. Note that breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women. Approximately one in every 8-10 women will develop breast cancer at some stage of her life and the risk depends on a number of factors including family history and reproductive history. Therefore it is not unexpected that women who have undergone Macrolane treatment may also develop cancer, without any relation to the use of Macrolane.
Does Macrolane affect mammography?
It is known that the presence of breast implants can affect the interpretation of mammograms. Patients should comply with standard breast screening procedures as recommended by their doctors or local health authorities. The radiologist should be informed about the implanted Macrolane gel. |
