Injectable Treatments

Botox
Botox injections are a diluted form of botulism which is injected into facial muscles to paralyse or weaken the muscles that form wrinkles. Botulinum toxins were first researched in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Botox was first approved in 1989 to treat eye muscle disorders (blepharospasm, uncontrollable blinking, and strabismus, crossed eyes).

In 2000, it was approved to treat a disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder contractions. As an unusual side effect of the eye disorder treatment, doctors observed that Botox softened the frown lines between the eyebrows.
Wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction, such as frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead creases can be safely and successfully treated with Botox. You will be asked to contract the facial muscles (frowning, squinting) that affect the area to be treated. This will help to determine the best location for the injection. The injection is normally injected directly into the muscle with a tiny needle.
Results are normally seen within a few days. The results generally last between 3-5 months.

Severe Underarm Sweating
Severe underarm sweating is a medical condition known as severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, which involves overactive sweat glands. Sweat is your body's temperature regulator. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body's normal requirements for cooling.

BOTOX® is FDA-approved for severe underarm sweating that is inadequately managed with topical agents. BOTOX® helps control this condition by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don't receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops. The procedure is relatively straightforward. A small volume of BOTOX® solution is injected into the affected underarm area through a very fine needle. The needle is placed just under the skin, so you may experience some injection-related discomfort. You will receive multiple injections based on your doctor's assessment of the area that needs to be treated.
You should notice a significant reduction in underarm sweating within 4 weeks of your first treatment. There is a possibility that some sweat glands may be missed, and you may continue to experience some sweating from the untreated areas therefore a further treatment might be required. The doctor will assess this at your check-up

Fillers
This is a crystal clear gel form of hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body. Hyaluronic acid holds water, hydrating and giving volume to the skin. As we get older the production of our natural hyaluronic acid diminishes. A simple injection replenishes the lost volume and improves your looks by enhancing your facial profile, creating fuller lips, and smoothing out lines and wrinkles.

It adds volume to your skin without affecting your natural expression. It is non-permanent and is absorbed naturally over time - it’s your choice when to have further treatment to maintain the effect. The effect will typically last 6-12 months. The length of time it lasts is specific to each individual and the area treated. Whether you are looking for defined facial contours, fuller lips or softened facial lines, bring out the best in yourself - instantly and naturally.

Sculptra

What is Sculptra™?
Sculptra™ is an injectable treatment that works by stimulating the build up of the body’s own collagen to smooth out lines and wrinkles. Sculptra’s™ volumising effect also restores lost facial volume, resulting in a fuller younger-looking face. The overall effect is a youthful appearance with gradual, natural-looking results.

Suitable areas for Sculptra™
Sculptra™ is suitable for a number of areas on your face:

Deep folds between the nose and the mouth (nasolabial folds)
Folds around the corners of the mouth (marionette lines)
Sunken cheeks
Wrinkling in the cheeks or chin
Deep scars

Why choose Sculptra™?
Sculptra™ is a discreet approach which allows a gradual effect to occur. Usually 2 or 3 treatments are required and natural-looking effects should become noticeable after approximately six weeks.

Clinical studies have shown that the results of Sculptra™ can last for more than 3 years, significantly longer than many other injectable treatments.

It is well tolerated with over 17,000 treatments in the UK since 2005, (over 150,000 worldwide since 1999). The main ingredient of Sculptra™ has been used in medicine for over 10 years and is biocompatible and biodegradable.

No allergy testing is required before treatment.

Sculptra™ is sold by sanofi-aventis, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies.

How is Sculptra™ different?
A number of choices are available to you when you are deciding on treatment. Common temporary fillers do not provide long-term reduction of wrinkles and creases, and their results are often short lived. Permanent implants can remain for many years but cannot accommodate continued changes in appearance that occur with age. Sculptra™ is different.

Who will perform my treatment?
Jan Leiper our Aesthetic Nurse Specialist will perform your treatment. Jan has been fully trained to use the correct procedures by an approved sanofi-aventis healthcare professional.

Does the treatment hurt?
As with all injections you will feel some discomfort. It may be that you notice brief tenderness at the injection sites. Local anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment and ice packs are applied after to soothe the skin.

What is the after care following Sculptra™?
Jan will give you special aftercare instructions. These include:

To massage the injected areas for five minutes, five times a day, for five days. You may add in a massage cream to cause less friction to the skin.
To avoid excessive UVA and UVB exposure, saunas, steam rooms following your treatment.
To avoid applying make-up to the treated areas, for up to six hours post treatment.
If you need to cool the skin at home never put ice directly on to the skin, always wrap it up before application.

If any side effects occur, for example inflammation or small bumps in the treated areas inform Jan. Please look at our contact sheet for telephone numbers.

Are their any side effects?
The most common side effect with the use of Sculptra™ includes bruising, tenderness or slight swelling at the injection sites.
These side effects usually resolve in 2-6 days. One possible delayed side effect can be small bumps under the skin in the treated areas. These bumps may not be viable, and you may only notice them when you apply pressure to the skin. These bumps will tend to appear within the first 6-12 months after the initial treatment. Occasionally these bumps will go away on their own. Visible bumps, sometimes associated with redness or colour change to the treated area, have also been reported.
As with all procedures that involve an injection through the skin, there is a risk of infection.

Are the results immediate?
At your first treatment visit, it may appear the Sculptra™ has worked immediately because of the swelling from the injections and the water used to dilute the product. In a few days, when the swelling goes down and the water is absorbed by your body you may look like what you did before your treatment. Sculptra™ takes time to work, results should be noticeable after approximately 6 weeks. Jan will see you again in a few weeks to assess you. Generally 2 to 3 treatments may be necessary to obtain the required results. However, in contrast to some other treatments which require refresher sessions, after the end of your Sculptra™ programme the results can last more than 3 years.
