Laser Skin Improvement - Skin Rejuvenation, Laser Skin Resurfacing and Pigmentation

Skin Rejuvenation

Anything which makes the skin appear younger may be classed as rejuvenation.
As we age, our skin shows our age and the effects of life’s stresses. Skin becomes thinner and dry, letting our normal blood vessels show through as red or blue lines. As collagen is lost, the skin begins to sag and fines lines appear - which ultimately develop into wrinkles. Pores become larger and there may be roughness, scars from trauma or the residue of spots. Physical and mental stress, along with decades of sun exposure leads to pigmentation in both the superficial and deep layers of the skin. The normal turnover of our skin slows down, allowing dead and dry cells to accumulate, leading to a dull appearance.

The majority of our lasers can be used for skin rejuvenation, namely the Clearlift, Clearskin, iPixel Erbium and all 3 IPL applicators. They can also be used in combination to smooth the skin, plumping up the collagen and improving lines and wrinkles as well as tightening pores. Pigmentation is improved, leaving skin radiant and clear.  They offer little to no downtime, with excellent results, generally mild swelling and redness depending on the modality used.

The popularity of aesthetic procedures that aim to turn back the clock is sky rocketing. Brown spots, broken capillaries and other fallout from photoaging are easy targets for systems that use broadband light to repair these defects through a process called photorejuvenation. Additionally, facial wrinkles can now be treated non-ablatively, contributing to a more youthful appearance.

Using relatively low-energy, short-pulse broadband light, imperfections such as rosacea, superficial spider veins,  age spots and other discoloured signs of photoaging can be gently heated and eliminated, replaced by newer, younger looking skin. Using infrared energy to heat the skin stimulates the growth of new collagen. Facial wrinkles can be eliminated easily and non-ablatively.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Aging, sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle factors including nutrition, smoking and alcohol consumption all may contribute to facial wrinkling. Pigmentary changes of the skin, such as blotchiness or brown spots, may also occur with age or as a result of birth control pills, pregnancy or genetic factors. Prior acne may have made the surface of your skin uneven. These problems, as well as certain other skin conditions, may be improved by skin resurfacing. In laser skin resurfacing a laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer.

What is Pixel?

Pixel is an FDA approved laser device designed to improve the quality and texture of your skin while stimulating collagen regeneration.

Why is Pixel preferred?

The Pixel module delivers results equal to ablative lasers but it eliminates possible side effects of ablative treatments.  It can also be used on the face, neck, chest, arms and hands, a much wider scope than the traditional technologies.

What Conditions will Pixel help to improve?

Pixel is for the treatment of wrinkles, scars (including some acne scars) superficial skin lesions and skin resurfacing.

What can patients expect?

Patients will  find the skin around the treatment area feeling firmer with a smoother surface texture.  There is no need for pain  medication. There is little or no discomfort during the treatment.  Most commonly, patients feel some slight warmth with the pulse of the laser.  Patients experience a mild sunburn sensation afterwards (3-4 hours) that is easily neutralised with a gentle moisturiser.  Make-up can be applied immediately afterward.

What is the downtime?

There is relatively no down time. Redness may occur for a few hours to a few days and flaking for one or two days with full recovery in five days.

How many treatments are necessary?

Skin resurfacing with the Pixel is a gradual process that happens over several treatments, usually 3-5 sessions at 4 week intervals.  Since Pixel is an Erbium Laser, patients with more moisture in their skin experience more sensation and greater results in fewer treatments.  A patient with dry skin may require more treatments.

Pigmentation

Pigmentation in the skin arises from sun exposure over the years, made worse by sunburn, sun beds and smoking. Eventually pigmentation can be seen as age spots, or large freckles. Freckles are never seen in children, they develop over time and with exposure to the sun. Pigmentation may also come up secondary to hormonal changes, e.g. pregnancy, due to some medications and after scarring which is exposed to the sun, for example after acne. We can treat pigmentation with several modalities. The most important part is to stop the use of sunbeds. Use very high sun protection when outside – a minimum of factor 30 year round and factor 50 in the summer.

At Kirkwood Fyfe we can use laser, IPL and skin peels  to improve pigmentation. We also stock the Obagi skin care range, which includes prescription only skin lightening creams and retinoids. Treatments can be used in combination.
